The Basics
Before Learning what VG and PG are, it’s important to understand the process that turns liquid into vapor, which then translates into the need for VG/PG. These two are base liquids that eventually become vapor when heated at high temperatures. VG and PG carry the flavor from the liquid, into your mod, and straight to your taste buds. Though there are many liquids out there that contain only VG, generally there is a mix of VG/PG in eLiquid to provide a well-rounded experience when vaping. The amount of VG/PG is typically displayed on the side of the bottle.
What is PG?
PG stands for propylene glycol. This is clear, odorless and flavorless. While many tend to leave PG out of the equation considering the much smaller percentage of it that is used in eLiquid, it’s actually quite important, as it is much better at transferring nicotine and flavoring than VG. It is also important to note how PG performs when it is turned to vapor. This is often found to be the responsible party for giving what people refer to as a “throat hit.”
What is VG?
VG stands for vegetable glycerin. While that may sound like an intimidating name for a substance which you inhale, it’s actually just a naturally occurring substance found in vegetable oils. It is clear and had no smell, but occasionally can be described as tasting sweet. Above all else, it has been used in many products/items, including food, for many years. This is the predominant base liquid in most flavors, with a much higher percentage of VG being present over PG. It creates a smooth vapor flow and large clouds, so if you’re into tricks, this is the way to go.
Which VG/PG Ratio Is Right for You?
-
Max VG: When constructed, these liquids are given the highest amount of VG on the market, excluding PG as much as possible. If you enjoy doing tricks or cloud blowing competitions, this is the ratio for you. However, the flavors may not be as strong, so keep this in mind.
-
40 PG/60 VG: If you’re looking for a fairly equal mix of flavor, throat-hit, and full, steady clouds, this may be the ratio for you. You’ll retain the intensity of the flavor while also being able to produce visual marvels.
-
30 PG/70 VG: This has easily become the most popular ratio on the market, delivering just the right amount of flavoring while also keep the clouds smooth and full, according to many people. This provides a slight throat “kick.”
